1) Initial Distinctions On Joining Pakistan Air Force:-
Air Vice Marshal Farooq Umar (the son of Mian Muhammad Nurullah The First Finance Minister of Punjab in the 1947/48 Mamdot cabinet) joined Pakistan Air force in 1958 and graduated as a fighter/Combat pilot from the air force Academy at Risalpur in 1960 with distinction after winning Triple honours i.e. Sword of Honour, Best Pilot’s Trophy and the Academics Trophy. He subsequently won the Jet Conversion Trophy in 1961 and the “Top Gun” award as well as the Roll of Honour from the Fighter leader School in 1971.
2) Educational Qualifications:-
Having received his initial schooling at Burn hall Abbottabad, Central Model School and Government College Lahore, he did his B.Sc Honours in 1976 from Karachi University, M.Sc War Studies from Quaid-e-Azam University in 1978, and sent his thesis for Doctorate (Phd) in International Relation’s from the Royal College of Defence studies London 1983.
3) Royal College of Defence Studies London:-
He was the First and Only Asian student who was Honoured and was Requested by the British to give a Presentation to the Queen of England and the Prime Minister of England( Mrs Margaret Thatcher) regarding “Pakistan’s Importance for NATO” and the Need for Pakistan to rejoin the British Common Wealth”. (While in RCDS London 1982).
4) Operational Combat Record :-
In order to defend our motherland AVM Farooq Umar has fought many Major and Minor battles as a Thorough Bred Combat pilot. He defended Pakistan against India in the battle of “Biar Bet” in the “Runn of KUTCH”After that in Kashmir Operations and the Battle of Akhnur near Jammu, followed by Active participation in the Indo_Pak war 1965, and Indo-Pak war 1971, as well as the Arab-Israel war 1973. 5) Gallantry Awards :-
For Bravery in Combat for the Defence of Pakistan and for his Outstanding Meritorious Service, he has been decorated 12 times by the Government of Pakistan , Out of which three (3) times he has been Decorated for Courage and Bravery in Combat (Gallantry Award of Sitara-e-Jurrat, Sitara-e-Basalat and Tamgaha-e-Basalat)
6) Service Record :-
AVM Farooq Umar has taught in the National Defence College War Wing(now NDU) and has the Honour of being Air defence Sector Commander Sindh and Baluchistan, Base Commander Lahore , Commandant PAF Staff College Faisal Karachi, Base commander Faisal Air Base Karachi, and Director General Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra to name just a few .
7) Ministry of Defence:-
After finishing his Tenure of 35 years in Uniform he was Seconded to the Federal Government and was asked to Setup “Shaheen Air Lines” and thereafter, he was made CEO and Managing Director PIAC and given Grade-M1 (Which is Equal to three Stars).
8) President PHF:-
AVM Farooq Umar was also elected “President Pakistan Hockey Federation.” (PHF) It was during his tenure that he Resurrected Pakistan Hockey and made it Win the “World Champions Trophy” and the “World Cup Sydney 94” after a long lapse of 14 years . (Since he Left his President Ship Pakistan has not able to Win these titles although an other 16 long years have since elapsed. 9) Family Life:-
Farooq Umar is married with four children and Eight Grand Children. Presently as part of his social work programme he has been helping the deaf, dumb and the blind in Rural Area and has been giving a series of 16 lectures to the Youth in Schools Colleges, Univesities and Clubs. He is one of the few Air Force Officers whose Achievements have been reflected in the world’s Who is Who 1998 (Published in USA)
Very Sadly and Tragically his Better half Mrs. Seemen Farooq Ex Chairperson Women Sports Board died of Pulmonary Odema on 31st August 2001.
10) Honorary Social Work:-
Until quite recently he was the elected President of Majlis-e-Quaid-e-Azam, President AFOS (Falcon Enclave), Vice President PAFROA Punjab and Patron in Chief Al-Shaoor Welfare Association (All Honourary)
